Description:
Lukas is a pure-bred Australian Shepherd. He is a rather average size for the breed, standing at 21 inches at the shoulder. He has medium bone. Tough enough to take a hit, but still light enough to have incredible agility. His legs are powerful and he’s able to jump huge heights and loves doing so into the water, getting incredible air and distance while doing it.
He’s a red tri Aussie. His chocolate colored fur is a dark and rich hue. In the warm months, it lightens considerably due to the sun hitting it. He has a mostly white face with a wide blaze that runs to the back of his head to between his shoulders. His entire muzzle is white and the white marking on his face runs down the front of his neck. He has rust colored markings on his legs. His front legs are mostly white while only the toes of his hind legs have white markings.
Like most Aussies, he’s tailless, though his taillessness is due to docking when he was a puppy rather than a natural tailless gene. His eyes range from pale green to gold.
Personality
Skills: Herbology, jumping, working under pressure, bedside manner, anatomical knowledge Abilities: n/a
Description:
Lukas is an optimist and is appreciative of life around him. He truly wants to be the greatest healer that ever lived. He thrives on testing his limits, his knowledge, and works wonderfully under pressure. He is an eager pupil willing to soak up knowledge from every source. He is extremely clever, well-socialized, and it’s easy to gather that he had once belonged to a human. He’s sensitive, but resilient. His sensitivity means that he wears his heart on his sleeve—he doesn’t really lie when it comes to how he feels. And his resiliency is the only thing that keeps him from losing his mind.
He’s a dog that truly believes he’s doing the right thing. He has a sense of morality, is empathetic, and has wonderful bedside manner, but gets annoyed when his patients do not cooperate. In that case, he works without minding their pain and focusing entirely on the end goal: To heal them. If he is required to explain what he’s doing, for example, to a pupil of his, he balances the needs of his patient and student expertly.
He’s bright and interested in the inner workings of dog’s anatomy. For a dog with odd anatomy such as a short legged or a flat faced dog, he will have a desire to examine them to see how their bodies differ from the norm. His rather enamored by the deformed and the disabled and finds them absolutely fascinating. He’s usually polite enough to ask, but sometimes his youth and zeal gets the better of his manners.
While at first glance, he seems to not belong in Ash River Project. The truth is that he doesn’t really belong anywhere else: He doesn’t find anything wrong with dissecting a dead body or digging up a grave. He also doesn’t see anything wrong with injuring a dog when you have the full intention of healing them or at least preparing them for a lifetime of disability should he had had to compromise quality of life to save them in the process. Success to him is measured in whether or not the heart keeps beating at the end of the day. He also doesn’t see what’s wrong with testing the effects of medicines—both man-made and natural—on subjects in order to gauge their effects. If it’s for the bettering of his ability to heal, surely the good outweighs the bad?
History
Lineage:Father: Dirk | Basal | Australian Shepherd | alive
Mother: Brownie | Basal | Australian Shepherd | alive
Sibling(s): Illia | Basal | Australian Shepherd | alive
Nathan | Basal | Australian Shepherd | alive
Background:
Luke’s mother, Brownie, lived in a home of a hobby breeder who bred Aussies for intelligence, work ethic, and instinct, especially for the military. She picked a stud for Brownie. They couldn’t stand each other, but were the best pairing according to their breeder. However, his mother had been a cryptic merle, leaving two puppies double merle in the small litter of three. Luke himself came out a red-tri, winning the genetic lottery that round.
He was quickly attached to his sister, a pitiful creature with hearing in one ear and with small, misshapen eyes that could see lights and shadows. Her structure, drive, and work ethic, however, were completely intact. It was a cause of much frustration to her, of which Luke lent an understanding ear. The other double merle in the litter, his brother, survived at the breeder’s intervention and was sold as a pet to a noble who liked his color and had a lot of land.
Luke stayed with his breeder, who actually worked his sister, whom had been spayed, in the same training as him, preparing him for military work, but only training his sister as a strange little experiment. Luke ran the trials very well, earning accolades from his breeder, and soon grew to have a strong aptitude towards jumping. His sister did as well. However, one day, his sister miscalculated a jump and had an injury to her spine. The resulting injury left a huge impression on Luke as he watched his sister go from unable to move to slowly regaining the ability to take steps and then run. She was never her old self. In her recovery, Lukas had her describe what her rehab looked like, what surgery was like, and the tales from the veterinarian.
He knew then that he desired to be able to work that sort of magic on a fellow dog. He became curious about the anatomy of dogs and wondered if there was any way he could manage to even come close to healing another dog. “I know what I want to do,” he said to his sister. “More than anything else in the world. I want to be a healer. Forget this military dog stuff.” She gave him her blessing, which was the only blessing he cared about.
He didn’t leave his family on any grounds of cruelty or hatred, as he was very well cared for with a promising career. He only wanted to see how much more he could learn. At about a year, he ran away and found a pack to join where he could apprentice under a healer: Ash River Project. He had visited other packs, but this one seemed like his best option for making true progress in his dream. He learned how to use a Watcher in order to aid him in his medical procedures.
He had been an Ash River dog for three years now, climbing the ranks until he can now teach others his trade. When Carver made it harder for him to do his work, he allied himself with Finley and helped bring her to power. He loves his craft and always seeks to improve. At any cost necessary. He still occasionally visits his sister when he can.
