John is a color known as a chocolate sable. He inherited the color from his collie grandfather. He has eyes that in certain lights seem olive green and in other lights seem to be hazel. On closer inspection, one can see the pupil of his right eye is a very dark red. He’s got a brown nose and brown paw pads. His ears are thin and the fur on them is dark brown. His brown color form a saddle on his back that climbs up his neck and forms a widow’s peak. His face is gold without a hint of a blaze. He has a white spot on his chest and white toes on his hind feet. He has a minimal white tip to his tail. Overall, he doesn’t have much white on him. He has slightly longer hair on his shoulders and down his back, showing his heritage as an Augment.
He has had many upgrades to his body over the years. His right eye has improved vision, able to zoom in and out. His skeleton, including his teeth, is a powerful metal alloy usually reserved for military grade weaponry. Though he has a narrow face, his jaw is incredibly powerful. His heart and lungs are bio-enhanced as well, giving him incredible endurance. John surprisingly doesn't have many scars thanks to his nanobots, but it is the heavy modifications that provide a hint of what he had been through.
He has a sighthound look to him, though there is a bit of collie to his face. He moves easily. He corners tightly and uses his modified body’s agility and speed very well. He’s a champion at jumping and has tight, lean muscles. His paws are small and sure-footed. He is a bit twitchy and not really able to sit still due to his overall anxiety. He has a nervous, tenor voice and is soft spoken. He sounds younger than he is. He doesn’t wag his tail often, but when he does, it’s a whippy, happy blur.
Skills: Killing, tracking, thievery, torture
Abilities: Enhanced jaw strength, enhanced endurance, cybernetic eye
John has an incredible set of skills that indicate a life of darkness: killing, torture, thievery, shadowing a dog, how to keep from being tracked, and the art of intimidation. John understands that strength is not his strong suit and has been trained to use his speed and knowledge of a dog’s anatomy to dispatch his foes. Often times, he finds comfort in fantasizing how he would kill the dog he’s talking to. He enjoys spilling blood. It’s hard to imagine a dog like him to possess such terrible skills, but it’s there. He enjoys doing things he knows how to do, but he operates under a strict obedience to whosoever holds his heart. In the past, it had been his ruthless mother. Since her death, he has latched onto the pack which seemed the most likely to help him.
He’s far from an independent dog and usually needs reminding of some sort to engage in activities such as feeding and giving himself water. He’s restless and has a nervous, frenetic energy about him, which he often tries to displace by sprinting and zooming around. It does little to dispel his uneasiness. Sometimes, when running does nothing to whet his appetite for action, he engages in hunting. Usually, he aims for non-canine animals. Sometimes he hunts other dogs, but aborts his hunt before he goes in for the kill. Rarely does he lose his control.
He has a habit of stammering when spoken to and averting his gaze. Being directly addressed or scolded can trigger panic attacks; as does densely populated areas. His skillset lacks interpersonal communication. He’s used to being the obedient son of an abusive mother and she was the one who spoke for him. He loves to hear any word of praise and works hard for the approval of others. However, the presence of others adds to his anxiety. He doesn’t really know much about how to connect with others, but gives such intense loyalty to whoever earns his trust that not even severe abuse could dissuade him. He’s naïve about many things, but suspicious about the intentions of others to the point of near paranoia.
He has an air of sadness about him. Despite his hard past, he has a tender heart and is capable of the sweetest of acts, driven by his need for the approval of others. He tries to keep his demons at bay through secrets, lies, and sheer will. As such, he comes across as incredibly restrained. He’s nervous, frenetic, anxious, and shy, but under this exterior, he is at the brink of chaos.
Father: Strider | Augment | Greyhound | deceased
Mother: Ruthie | Esper | Whippet x Smooth Collie | deceased
Sibling(s): Roland | Augment | Greyhound x Whippet x Smooth Collie | deceased
John's mother, Ruthie, lived in Ash River Project since she was born. She was an experimental subject. She had been taken apart and put back together more times than she could count and with the scars to prove it. And for a long time, she had been planning her escape. Unfortunately, by the time she could escape, she was mated to Strider, a Grifter in the pack so that her children could be studied themselves. She left the pack, finding a small group of dogs to see her through her pregnancy and help take care of her newborn sons.
She was paranoid, always afraid that someone was coming to take her back. She had some knowledge of the genetics of the dogs on Canaria, having seen many experimental litters born during her time in Ash River Project and having bore two herself before she chose to leave the pack. When she saw that her sons didn’t bud horns at 8 weeks of age, she knew that they must be Augments just like their father was. Soon, she left the small group of dogs. Or rather, they kicked her out, losing patience for her insanity.
Away from the influence of other dogs, Ruthie raised her boys to be killing machines just in case someone would come to take her back. She would break their bones and force the nanobots to heal them back stronger, reinforced with metal. She would destroy her sons and watch them come back together again and she almost hated them for being able to lose their scars when she didn’t have a trace of them. Had Ash River taken her back, she probably would have a much higher rank because of what she had learned of Augment upgrades,, but she didn’t see that. All she saw was her obsessive need to protect herself. She trained her boys, unleashing them after other dogs, stealing food from them, tricking them, doing awful things. Killing them. Roland loved the challenge while John simply obeyed.
However, Roland wanted to leave a beautiful dog alive and his mother wanted no competition for her love. When Roland couldn’t, she ordered John to kill the female. Since that moment, Roland’s eyes opened. John remained remained ever obedient while Roland was always trying to challenge her and what she was doing to them.
Because John was so meek, Ruthie could do more to him. Once, she broke his jaw so it could come back stronger. He almost starved to death while he healed, being barely able to eat, while Roland looked on with horror. Truthfully, she was slowly making John the stronger brother so she could kill the defiant son. Of course, Roland was always the intelligent brother and figured it out and attacked her. Without an order, John killed Roland for touching his mother, losing his eye in the process.
However, she had been irreparably damaged in the attack. John tended to her and she had a darker heart than most. He remembered hearing about Ash River’s Physicians, but she refused, begging to be taken elsewhere. Anywhere but there. Soon after she died, leaving her son with no social skills to speak of or the ability to take care of himself without someone telling him what to do. He has a lot to learn.
