Rank Explanations

Alpha Pair - The Alpha pair usually is a team between the lead male and female. They run the pack, keep the peace, and assign ranks. Requires having survived The Winter Survival Test. Though mates can inherit the rank, those that have not yet taken the test will not be respected as much as those who have.

Beta Pair - The advisers to the Alphas. The Betas are involved in the leading and running of the pack. Depending on the Alphas, they can have a large or small role. Requires having survived The Winter Survival Test as well. As like the Alpha pair, a mate can inherit the rank, but tends not to have earned the respect until he or she passes the test.

Lead Hunters & Lead Warriors - Typically regarded as the same level in the ranking system, these are positions which lead a party either in the hunt or in the fight. Of course, they tend to be able to do either job rather well and in times of need, warriors are known to hunt and hunters known to fight. Requires Survival Test.

Healers - Healers are herbalists here in Winterwood. Their craft is steeped in traditions. This is one of the few high ranks which does not require a survival test and is a great way for a dog who has difficulty keeping up with the pack to make a difference and play an important role. They take Apprentices.

Teachers - Teachers are those who teach the dogs under a year old. They provide puppies with the foundation to understand how to survive and will the dogs how to use their bodies and toughen up and be resourceful. Some teachers are kind and guiding while others are tough with a sink-or-swim mentality. Many are Hunters or Warriors or Scouts which have retired due to injury or old age, but some are dogs with a natural affinity with the younger pups and chose to direct their skills in that way.

Shaman - This is the dog in charge of leading the pack's ceremonies such as the Marriage Ceremony. This is a dog with a great way with words. They tend to sort of fall into the position. It's a position which a dog fills for a long time and so a dog has to love the job.

Hunters & Warriors - Hunters are dogs who are able to hunt large game with a party. Warriors are dogs who are able to fight other dogs and trespassers either on their own or in a group. Led by either a Lead Hunter or Warrior. It depends on the dog if they can do the other role if called upon, as some Hunters are not good Warriors and vice versa. While not required, Hunters & Warriors garner a lot more respect if they have passed the Winter Test.

Scouts - These are dogs who journey over the land and report back news of the land.

Subordinates - These are the adults who cannot, for whatever reason, do any other ranking or they are newly joined members of the pack. Any member who has stayed long enough tends to be sorted into either a Hunter, Warrior, or Scout. Examples of dogs here are dogs who cannot keep up, yet are unable to teach or train, but have been promised to be protected by the pack.

Pups - Puppies are highly regarded as the future of Winterwood. Even before they are weaned, the puppies' training begins. All puppies of any rank can grow up into the higher ranks, it all depends on their ambition in the pack.

Omegas - Dogs who have disgraced the pack. Either they used their powers in excess or they have endangered another dog due to poor judgment. If they are dangerous, they are exiled from the pack rather than put into the Omega position.
